November 22, 2024 Newsletter
It’s been eight weeks since Hurricane Helene landed on the western coast of Florida, leaving a trail of devastation from Florida to Tennessee.
Eight weeks of heart-wrenching rescue, looking for and reuniting with loved ones, clearing debris off of main roads, getting back to houses that look nothing like they did when they left … unless you’ve experienced this level of disaster, it’s hard to imagine what folks across the Southeastern United States are going through.
But, there is beginning to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Once in the dark - a lack of phone service and connection to the outside world, affected families can now see just how many people around the United States answered the call to help.
There have been response teams gathered and deployed from just about every denomination under the sun. And for you who couldn’t go, you gave through Midwest Mission. You gave your financial resources, time, and specific items we’ve requested.
We partnered with organizations like Global Citizen U.S.A and Food For The Poor that were on the ground, working hard to get the bare necessities in the hands of people who lost everything. Other organizations were also there, meeting other present needs, rescuing and responding, and being a listening ear during the disaster.
Disasters are monstrous, and you’d think it would be the perfect chance for the devil to rip communities apart. But, what we see is that in the midst of destruction God brings people together in community and mission.
Because of you we were quickly able to send four shipments of relief to Florida and North Carolina while in the Rescue phase of the four phases of disaster – readiness, rescue, relief, and recovery. Now, as people are able to get back into their homes and begin the cleanup, we move into the relief phase.
On Friday, November 22, we shipped a semi-truck full of requested disaster relief supplies through our partner, North Star Foundation. North Star connected with a non-profit hub in Miami, Florida, made up of five organizations that will each be distributing supplies to their respective communities. The truck will arrive at the Florida warehouse on Monday, November 25.
This shipment contained:
Since the hurricane hit, Midwest Mission has sent $556,051.66 worth of supplies to the affected areas. This is because of YOU.
Because of YOU we had the supplies on hand for the initial shipments, because you have faithfully given and volunteered in the past.
Because of YOU we were able to quickly purchase supplies to rebuild Disaster Cleaning Kits for the next shipment.
But, once again, our supply of Disaster Cleaning Kits is completely gone after this shipment. The empty shelves are back.
We need YOU to help us continue sending relief. You can donate funds towards hurricane relief here, or send a check with “Hurricane” in the memo, to help us build back our supply and be ready for the next shipment.
You can also purchase supplies and have them shipped to Midwest Mission, or build kits at home. Visit midwestmission.org/helene to learn more about what you can do!
Thank you for your generosity and dedication to meeting the needs of those affected by the disaster. The gifts they receive will make a life-long impact.
