In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene brough unprecedented flooding to western North Carolina. Areas that had never even been worried about hurricanes before, felt the extreme effects as almost 14 inches of rain fell over three days. Rivers flooded, causing rushing waters through roads, houses, and the businesses.

Many people lost everything.

Six months later, families are still not back in their homes, roads are still not cleared, and disaster relief is still needed.

We sent five shipments of supplies back in October to provide needed items for clean up from Florida to North Carolina. But, they are still in need of help.

Recently, Karen from Feeding the Multitudes based in Weaverville, NC, reached out to Brad Walton, Director of Operations, about needing more supplies.

Through several conversations, Brad and Karen worked together to develop a list of items they needed in North Carolina, and were available at Midwest Mission.

“Karen teared up several times on the phone when she would talk about what they needed, and I would tell her we could get it to her,” Brad said.

It’s not just an organization that is helping people, it is people who either personally know what it’s like to lose everything, or closely know people who have lost everything.

“We are grateful for everyone who donated towards Hurricane Helene relief last year,” Brad continued. “Because of the generosity of our Midwest Mission donors, six months later we are still able to meet needs they have in North Carolina.”

The only thing left was the cost of shipping the supplies. Most of the time, we require our partners to cover the costs, but in certain circumstances, they are unable to. Right now, Feeding the Multitude is using all of their resources to help people in their community, and we didn’t want the shipping costs to stop them from getting items they really need.

An anonymous donor heard about the situation and made a donation to cover the cost of shipping. We are so thankful for their generosity, and that God led them to this, so others may be blessed in their time of crisis.

This morning, the supplies were loaded onto a truck that should arrive in North Carolina by tomorrow.

It included:

  • 280 Personal Dignity Kits

  • 745 lbs of Tools

  • 432 Cleaning Kits

  • 168 Tornado Kits

  • 28 Boxes of Fire-resistant clothing donated by Workwear outfitters

  • 76 Coolers donated by Dometic

  • 120 Tarps donated by Lamar Advertising

  • 12,000 Rice and Soy Blessing Bags

  • 1 Generator

  • And air fresheners, insect repellent, new clothes, and puzzles

The value of this shipment is $164,399.54

Over the last several months, the Cleaning Kits have been distributed throughout western North Carolina. The recipients have been so thankful.  We are glad they will be quickly getting more supplies they need.

Thank you for supporting Midwest Mission, so in times like these, together we can meet the needs of people, and bring light and hope to their darkest days.
